I am trying to join the Navy, and I have to get a dependancy waiver. I also have a lot of debt and am about to file for bankruptcy. Will this all keep me out of the Navy?

Yes, too much debt will keep you out of the US Navy. I believe the standard they are using is that if your monthly payments equal or exceed 40% of your base pay you are not eligible to enlist.

How much debt are we talking about? I’ve known people with 30k in debt in the Navy. Being in debt also affects security clearance status. So certain jobs may not be available to you such as cryptography or information specialist. This is because people with lots of debt may be tempted to sell US Secrets overseas.
