What Are Some Careers Where Someone Can Counsel Children?
I can think of three good ones.
1. Social work. Social work was designed as a family oriented field. It isn’t quite as heavy on that anymore but still a solid path if you want to work with kids. Plus you only need a masters degree.
2. Mental health counseling with a focus on family counseling. Similar to the social work but easier to find universities with this degree. Again, masters degree needed.
3. School psychology. You would pretty much need to get a PhD and you would work in a school. A lot of work, the pay is modest but the people who do it seem to love every minute of it.
Really the bottom line is that you would need at least a masters to counsel children and you have three paths: social work, mental health counseling, and psychology. All a little different but they would all take you where you want to go.

There are hundreds of non-profit organizations as well that cater to aiding children that you could volunteer for.
