School counseling vs. school psychology, what’s the difference?

I am interested in pursuing a career in either school counseling or school psychology. It seems like there is a lot of overlap between the two fields.

What do school counselors do that school psychologists DON’T do, and vice versa?

    School counselors provide a range of services, it can be helping with an issue a student may have coping with school. The issue can be from school or home. In high school they schedule classes and advise about college or other post-secondary pursuits. Some counselors hold workshops, some counsel students individually and in groups. If abuse is suspected, the counselor is usually the point person for that. At the same time if a student enters a school and is on the caseload of social services, the counselor is point person for the caseworker.

    School psychologists often deal with “organic” problems. They may test students to see if they need addiitional services / programs, typically special ed. Once in those programs, they continue to test and monitor progress.

    Psychology is more involved with the personal problems of the individual while counseling is more concerned with the program and educational problems faced by the student./
