Resume Advice For Career Change ?

I currently work in financial services, but am seeking a position in school counseling (having recently completed the required education for such a role) Any suggestions about how to make an effective resume that reflects my experience and skills but makes it seem more relevant to the position I’m seeking?

    Hi Schleppy
Job applicants writing a career change resume often focus on ‘transferable skills’ and use a functional format in their resume to showcase skill groups or clusters rather than depending on a ‘reverse chronological’ job history to illustrate professional development.
It’s perfectly possible to create a hybrid format that focuses on the skills but still includes a job history section.
It’s up to you to identify your transferable skills that will matter most to a prospective employer and promote these accordingly, particularly in the skills summary at the top of the resume.
Check out the site below, which includes an article on career change resumes. Good luck in your new career!

Always put down your previous work experience on a resume even if it is not the field of work you are applying for. If you don’t then your resume would be very short.
I would highlight in your cover letter your interest in a career change as well as your recent education achievement.
