Careers With Children…social Work/school Counseling?

I just earned my bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies. I’ve always been interested in working with children and initially wanted to become an elementary school teacher– however, I’ve since then decided to continue with grad school, but I’m not sure what direction to go in.
I really enjoy working one on one with children. I find it rewarding to help those that have special needs (physical, emotional, etc.) and give them the extra support necessary to be successful. I’ve been working as a teacher’s aide in a pre-school and enjoy it…but I want to expand.
I’ve been researching school social work and school counseling. Does anyone have any input or know of any other career paths that may match my interests?

In general you will find an MSW with a focus on school social work will match your desire best as many schools systems mandate social workers to work with special education programs and services. Of course each state is different so you will want to understand the specifics in that state. Since you are working in a school I would encourage you to talk with the school counselor and the social worker to understand the requirements. Be careful about advice regarding psychology degrees..in some states this is a dead end degree unless you go on for the PhD. DA

consider pursuing a master’s degree in clinical psychology which will allow you direct access to this vulnerable population while also supporting your own desire to help children in need.

Maybe you can get a degree in special education.

Take an inventory of what you like. There is a great free assessment tool available through O*Net called the Interest Profiler. The link is http://www.onetcenter.org/tools.html
I have done this survey myself and it is quite accurate. It suggests the types of employment that would suit you given the responses to the interest profiler.
