My wife and I were both in the same situation before meeting each other. We BOTH regret not going further in school and becoming doctors. If we had it to do over again we would not hesitate to go and are continually discussing this with friends' children or any one else in this position to tell them they will never forget getting their education. I now that it seems like a long time before you will be done, but its not like your life will not continue while you are in school. Besides, time goes by so fast and one day you will be that age (30?) and you will either be a successful Dr. with a career you can use to help others and give yourself a great quality of life as far as what that kind of income can give you and your children, or you will be that age looking back saying "if I just would have stayed with it I would be done by now!!" These are the experiences that my wife and I had. We ended up getting married and then quickly becoming pregnant. We still wanted to go as far into school as we could and ended up going to grad school and becoming Nurse Practitioners. We had to be away from each other while she worked to put me through school and then I did the same for her. It was very, very difficult, and we don't have near the opprotunity or income that the Dr's we work under make. I make less then 10% of what my Dr. boss makesand we do essentially the same job. You can still have a relationship and even kids while in residency. I hope you do what is best for you but we wish we would have had someone tell this to us when we were starting out. Our lives would be a lot different!! Good Luck.

You have many career options, genetic counseling is good if you also like people and counseling, you may also need additional training/school. Get a job in a lab either academic or biotech (you will make more money in industry), try different areas to see if Genetics is your favorite.
I gave up a PhD and an MD for a master's degree in molecular and cell biology, and I am totally happy with my family life and working in the biotech industry. Dont go to medical school, my father did and I lost many years of time with him, if that is really a concern of yours. There are many other interesting things you can do, I think you're on the right track.
